To the Editor,

Many will say my headline is an oxymoron, i.e. a combination of contradictory or incongruous words (such as cruel kindness), and in many cases that is true. Politicians, whether local, state or national, say just about anything in order to get elected, then once in office, their “memory” seems to fade, or as I prefer to think, the truth of their character and values becomes evident.

Every now and then, however, comes an individual who actually performs his civic and public duties with vigor, integrity and compassion for those represented. I have found this to be the case with state Sen. Floyd McKissick Jr.

Of course, those who are familiar with him will not be surprised, however, I wanted those who are not to know McKissick is one politician who does his best to do what he says he will do. Case in point: Some time ago, I contacted Sen. McKissick about the water quality issues many residents in the area have been experiencing — smells, discoloration, etc. After an in-depth review of the types of issues, I came to the conclusion, along with others, that providing individual water filters for each customer would resolve those issues.

I shared this with Sen. McKissick who advised due to districts being redrawn, he would soon not be representing Granville County, however, he would still make himself available to help with the matter. Sure enough, the districts were redrawn, and Sen. Mike Woodard became the representative for Granville County.

This, however, did not stop McKissick from following through on his promise to assist with the issue by writing in a sum of $600,000 in the state budget to be used for providing filters for South Granville Water & Sewer Authority customers. He kept his word, and for that, I commend him. Not just because he stepped in to help residents of the South Granville area, because when an elected official works for the good of the people he or she represents, it makes the entire process better and everyone wins.

Sen. Floyd McKissick Jr. is a winner.
