WAKE FOREST — Officials recovered the body of a 15-year-old girl from Falls Lake on Wednesday, a day after she jumped into the water to help her father rescue a 10-year-old boy.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office confirmed the girl's body had been found by rescue works shortly before noon. Her name had not been released as of press time.

The sheriff's office said the girl and her family spent Tuesday evening at a gathering at a cove near Ghoston and New Light roads, near the Shinleaf Recreation Area.

Around 6 p.m., the 10-year-old boy who had been playing in the water began to struggle to get back to shore, according to a sheriff's office press release. An adult male jumped in to rescue the boy, but he, too, needed assistance.

Deputies said the man's daughter, the 15-year-old girl, then jumped into the lake to help her dad rescue the boy. The man and boy made it back to shore, but the girl disappeared.

The father and boy were treated at a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Rescue personnel with the Wake County Sheriff's Office boat team, Durham County Sheriff's Office and the Youngsville Fire Department began searching areas of interested Tuesday evening. Rescuers were using sonar to search the lake.

Wake County Sheriff's Office spokesman Eric Curry said the case has been turned over to a medical examiner who will conduct an autopsy and determine the girl's cause of death.
