CREEDMOOR — The NC Department of Transportation will begin the realignment project for N.C. 56 (West Lake Road and West Wilton Avenue) where it intersects with U.S. 15 (North Durham Avenue) and N.C. 50 (Main Street) this month.
The project is scheduled to take six months and will necessitate lane closures and traffic delays in the construction zone.
The project will adjust the current traffic pattern from the series of turns currently needed to stay on N.C. 56 and form a direct tie between West Lake Road and Wilton Avenue. A new median-divided connecting road will be constructed north of the existing West Lake Road, and will improve traffic flow as well as driver and pedestrian safety. The project will also consist of sidewalk construction that will connect to the city of Creedmoor-managed Cross City Trail project.
West Lake Road and North Pine Street will maintain partial access throughout the project, and NCDOT will phase construction to avoid complete road closures and allow access to homes and businesses in the project area at all times.
Exercise caution when driving through the work zone, and watch for workers and equipment in the roadway. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to the posted speed limit, and any changes to the normal traffic pattern.
