WILTON — A motorcyclist died Saturday on N.C. Highway 96 after he veered into a lane of oncoming traffic and crashed into a John Deere tractor, state troopers said.

Normey Michael Medlin Jr., 45, of Franklinton, was driving a 2016 Yamaha motorcycle south on the highway near Wilton around 1:40 p.m., Sgt. William J. Henning with the N.C. State Highway Patrol said.

A preliminary investigation found Medlin traveled left of the center line and into the left lane. The motorcycle crashed into the 1993 tractor, operated by Isidro Valez Zarraga, 37, of Oxford.

Medlin was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. Zarraga was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and transported to a hospital, Henning said. His condition was unknown.

Henning said no charges will be filed.

Crash kills pickup driver

A second driver died Saturday in a single-vehicle incident on N.C. Highway 50, the highway patrol said.

According to Sgt. Christopher D. Knox, a 57-year-old man, Howard Eldridge Wilkerson, of Havelock, was driving a 2005 Dodge pickup south on the highway when he ran off the right side of the road just before 7:30 p.m.

The exact location of the crash wasn't given.

Knox said Wilkerson's truck struck several trees before overturning.

Wilkerson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash was still under investigation, Knox said.
